Kara Leigh Roncin, MD, is an accomplished board-certified pathologist with particular expertise in surgical and breast pathology and an educator at the Creighton University School of Medicine since 2023. Dreaming of becoming a doctor from a young age in Canada, she credits much of her success to her parents, who taught her resilience and perseverance. She earned a Bachelor of Science in cell biology and anatomy from the University of Saskatchewan in 2008, followed up with a bachelor’s in health science from the Medical University of the Americas and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of the Americas in 2016.
Dr. Roncin completed all her clinical rotations in the United States, spanning multiple states and cities. Upon completing medical school, she began a combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Case Western Reserve University and then University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where she spent four years. She followed this up with a fellowship in selective pathology focusing on breast pathology. She ultimately returned to her home country and became active as a clinical fellow and pathologist at Saskatchewan Health University from 2021 to 2023.
Since 2023, she has provided her skills and expertise as a dual board-certified pathologist at CHI Health, part of CommonSpirit Health, in Nebraska. Although new in her career, she was recently named a Top Pathologist by Best in Nebraska Magazine in 2024. In addition to this position and her role as a clinical instructor, she’s actively involved in patient initiatives and serves on the Department of Pathology Grand Rounds Committee, the Breast Health Professional Advisory Board, and the Network Cancer Committee. Additionally, since 2024, she’s been active as a medical director at Creighton University.
Dr. Roncin holds memberships with such organizations as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, American Society for Clinical Pathology, Digital Pathology Association, International Society of Urological Pathology, International Society of Breast Pathology, and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. Looking ahead, she strives to reintegrate pathology into patient care. She also plans on taking her second board exam and attaining either an MBA or MAEd to strengthen her passion for continuous learning and teaching.

Dr. Roncin began her medical journey by earning a Bachelor of Science with honors in anatomy and cell biology from the University of Saskatchewan in 2008. She then pursued a Doctor of Medicine at the Medical University of the Americas, graduating in 2016. Her medical education included comprehensive clinical rotations across multiple states and cities in the U.S., providing her with diverse and extensive clinical experiences. Following medical training, Dr. Roncin began her career as a resident doctor in combined anatomic and clinical pathology at Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, from 2016 to 2021. During this time, she further specialized by completing a fellowship in selective pathology with a focus on breast pathology for one year at Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Subsequently, she completed a clinical fellowship in surgical pathology with the Saskatchewan Health Authority in Saskatoon, Canada, in 2023, before working for the organization as a pathologist in 2023.
Dr. Roncin’s professional affiliations include membership in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the International Society of Breast Pathologists (ISBP), the International Society of Urological Pathologists (ISUP), the Digital Pathology Association (DPA), and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Roncin is actively involved in civic organizations. Since 2023 she has been collaborating with health providers from all aspects of medicine as the lead member for pathology on the local network cancer committee and the breast health advisory committee. Her recent initiatives include creating reflex testing algorithms for patients with either gastrointestinal or non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma that received full support from both committees and upper level management at every hospital Dr. Roncin services. Since 2024 she has lead the department of pathology grand rounds committee at CHI Health. Additionally, Dr. Roncin participates in a wide variety of community events, with some examples of previous engagements including the American Lung Association Annual Corporate Walk, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides, local events involving the Medical University of the Americas chapter of the American Medical Student Association, and volunteering with the Greystone Scholar Society in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Dr. Roncin’s hard work has been recognized with several accolades. While working on her residency training, she was honored with the Harry L. Taylor IV, MD Trainee Award in Pathology in 2018 and the Association of Residents and Fellows Travel Award in 2021. She also received a Jerome A. Smith Infectious Disease Poster Award from the Binford-Dammin Society of Infectious Disease Pathologists in 2021 and recognition by Best in Nebraska Magazine as a Top Pathologist in 2024. Dr. Roncin attributes her success to her parents, who instilled resilience and perseverance while coming of age.
Dr. Roncin is passionate about continuous learning and teaching and is considering furthering her education with either a Master of Business Administration or a Master of Arts in education. As a first generation medical school graduate, she enjoys mentoring medical students and residents of all backgrounds and prioritizes an environment of inclusivity and teamwork where she can help develop the next generation of leaders in medicine. Additionally, she hopes to further expand her presence on YouTube, where she has an educational channel that allows her to connect with and share her knowledge and experiences with a broader audience.
